Do you remember Pinterest? It’s the social media platform that allows for endless scrolling, creating inspiration for days and days. Pinterest is an American image sharing and social media platform, which lets users save, share and discover images in the form of an online pinboard.

It seems like Pinterest is the forgotten social media platform in the current landscape of socials, but it’s recently come out with a new and improved model: users can now purchase directly off pins and boards! After being a great success in the US for over a year now, it was time that the updated app hit Australian shores.

The move towards e-commerce sprouted from the increase in online shopping due to COVID-19. According to Australia Post, four in five (82%) of Australian households made an online purchase during 2020. The platform wanted to create a shopping experience that focussed on inspirational shopping.

Their mission statement talks about wanting to ‘empower people to discover things they love and inspire them to go do those things in real life.’ Instead of customers trying to visualise how a product will fit into a bigger setting, the inspirational photos on Pinterest will do it for them.

If a customer wants to buy a product that they see on Pinterest, users will still be taken to the retailer sites from the platform, but the Pinterest tab will remain open for a customer to continue browsing once they purchase. Due to the booming success of the shopping functionality, a shopping list function will be launched, which will allow users to save all their liked products in the one place. This creates an easy user-experience for everyone using the app!

As Shopify Experts, we are even more excited to see that there is an app that integrates Pinterest that store owners can install on their Shopify store. This will allow access to a suite of shopping features – a simpler way for customers to find you. Small and large businesses in various industries will benefit from social shopping on Pinterest.

So what does it mean for business owners? According to Pinterest Business, some of the key statistics from the platform include:

  • 60% of women make up more than 60% of Pinterest’s global audience
  • 459 million people use Pinterest every month to find ideas and inspire their next purchase
  • 97% of Pinterest searches are unbranded
